Using Planat to make the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Games Venues More Accessible

Description
We are seeking 1-2 motivated students to assist with using the Planat accessibility tool to describe and rate UBC athletics and UBC housing venues hosting the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games. Part of the Rick Hansen Foundation, Planat is an online map-based service providing information and ratings of accessibility features from a mobility, sight, and hearing perspective in buildings and public spaces. The purpose is to create a more inclusive and accessible space for participants of the 2014 Games and visitors to the UBC Vancouver campus.

Responsibilities
Chiefly, this will involve assisting with facility assessments and data entry, coordinating the project stakeholders and deliverables, and providing a review of Planat along with recommendations for further accessibility enhancements of UBC buildings and public spaces.
This project is jointly supported by the UBC Centre for Sport and Sustainability, UBC Athletics & Recreation, UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services, the Organizing Committee for the 2014 Games, and Planat.

Duration
Work duration is April 1 – July 31, 2014 with a time commitment of approximately 6-8 hours per week. A stipend will be provided at the following student rates:
PhD: $24.95 per hour; Master’s: $24.00 per hour; Undergrad: $16-18 per hour.

Requirements

  • Registered as an undergraduate or graduate student
  • Background in accessibility design a plus
  • Experience with data collection a plus
  • Strong communication skills – verbal and written
  • Excellent team player, and capability to work independently
